Put the champagne on ice (for at least another week).....

.... as 2 of the 3 Saturday Hcc sides striving for promotion, with an impeccable sense of timing, decided  to delay their charge by a week to allow the party balloons to be inflated, the streamers and ticker-tape to be ordered in and banners to be written, for the promo-party planned for the following Saturday 7th Sept instead...

    BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND.....

saw all but one of our teams enjoy a fruitful couple of days...
starting with perhaps the brightest news, with our sole representatives out on Sunday, in Willow’s Sunday Single Team League, gaining their first victory of the season, away at Aston Unity. Performing the “clowns into a small car” act on the HCC car-park, 11 happy souls tootled off to Unity in a couple of cars to enjoy a very hard-fought contest, resulting in an excellent, thrilling one-wicket win! Bowling first on a helpful surface, Unity were reduced to 98-8, but were held up by the oppo’s tail, who put on 62 for the last wicket (hands up which bowlers were put around the park by a young girl then?!!)...

3 out of 4 aint bad...

...as Hcc’s top 3 sides retained their second-place position in their respective leagues, whilst putting clear daylight between themselves and their nearest challengers...
In the BL, our 1st xi comfortably reached a modest Water Orton total of 157 (thanks to 3 wickets each for skipper Raj and Land, completing a match-hat-trick-hangover from his last game and a couple for Sajjad).

    Silvers all round...

as all the top 4 Hcc Saturday sides now lie in 2nd place in their respective divisions, as we enter the final run in of the season..... (joe palmer would be proud)

Starting in the BL, our 1st xi had results go their way, first completing a good victory over Stratford, whilst promo rivals OE’s and Stourbridge both lost ground. Winning the toss and batting, Hcc managed 216 in their 55, built around the ever-reliable Lloyd’s 87, backed up by 20s from Nirru, Arnold & Guriq. They then blasted the home side away for just 134, with skipper Raj snaring 3 and Land finishing their tail off with 3 wickets in his first (and the game’s final) over.
This leaves them 34 pts behind Oswestry, but a crucial 6 ahead of the other two, who we are both still to play, as the matches revert back to 50 overs, Win/ Lose format, from now on. Before those crucial matches, a potential banana skin in Water Orton (the only side to actually beat us so far) lies in wait this coming Saturday, as the final push over the top for Div 1 promotion begins...

Sawarjit Singh calls the tune again....

... as he stole the show in Navid’s WL 4th xi game home to league-leaders, Droitwich 3rds, scoring 117 out of HCCs 229, Sam Preece supporting with 18no. Not content with scoring over half the runs, Sawarjit then opened the bowling and slung down 11 overs for 14, whilst opening partner, Stef Kowalik took 3-28 at the other end. Later in the innings, 2 wickets each for Karan, Sarban & Amar had Droitwich teetering on the edge, but they held on for the last 3 overs for the losing draw. Two wins in their final two league games may yet see this team clamber off the bottom of Div 7.

Singh’s on song, as sixths start season in sizzling sunshine.

A pretty good Saturday for Hcc, with Navid’s WL 4th xi finally registering their first victory of the season thanks to a fine all round performance from Sawarjit Singh.

In JP’s double-wedding absence, stand-in skipper, Saiful Islam guided the WL 3rd xi to victory away at Ombersley.

    Scorchio!!!!

On the hottest Saturday of the year so far, some HCC teams reached boiling point, whilst others wilted in the heat…

First those on a hot-streak, as our BL 1st xi restricted visitors, Halesowen, to just 215, with master-tweaker, Tigg, coming into his own, on the drying, dustier surface to claim 5fer, fellow spin-twin, Lloydy chipping in with a couple late on and Irish Warwickshire Academy new-boy, Mark Adair claiming his first HCC scalp to lead things off.

Saturday Night’s Alright (and Sunday wasn’t bad either)..

With one notable exception, a “non-losing Hcc Saturday” – a rare event!

Starting with the rule-prover, it was sad that, for the first time since we started fielding 6 league sides on Saturdays, we were unable to get a team out to fulfil our WL 4th xi fixture, due to the high number of cry-offs late on last week, so what remained of Navid’s team were dispatched to help out JP and Kesta’s xi’s instead.

Odds on playing? Others will Even things out…

In a week to keep Noah busy, the inclement weather claimed all our “odd” teams, as both our BL and WL 1st & 3rd xi’s never even dipped their toes on Saturday.

So it was left to the “Evens”, to dodge the showers and set sail away from the Hcc dock, on a treasure hunt for points and league positions…

High Time vs Highley for JP, but High Tide for Water Orton as they drown out 1st xi batting.

Our WL 3rd xi notched their first league victory on Saturday, as an excellent all round bowling + fielding display turned Highley low-key, restricted to just 97-9 in their 45 overs.
4 wickets for Gaurav and 3 each for Aqib ….
    and
Abu, on debut, creating a right to-do, from over 2 …. (onwards).
Another debutant, Usman Sajid, with 37, assisted by Harith (26*), saw the victory safely secured, inside 19 overs.

Shakespeare’s Stratford swiftly succumb, as “the Bard”(o) returns on Sunday….

King George 1st was only a twinkle in his great grandfather’s eye, when William was busy writing his plays, upon the Avon. But on Saturday, another “George” ruled, as Land joined Sajjad in a Romeo & Juliet perfect partnership to create a Midsummer Night’s Dream result for our Birmingham League (BL) 1st xi. They rescued the top order’s Comedy of Errors, at a perilous 90-7, chasing an improbable 216, but soon decided there was Much Ado about Nothing when it came to the Stratford bowling attack as they reached their target with an over to spare, Just As You Like It, with both still undefeated at the crease. The unlikely victory had earlier been set up with a sharing of the wickets (Land 2-35 & Nirru 2-39), with containment more the running-order of the day. As the Hamlet victory cigars were lit, they now sit 16 points clear of other royalists, Old Elizabethans and 20 ahead of Attock.

1st xi March to victory as Eastnor falls early this year...

...As the Herefordshire side capitulated to 72 all out, against an excellent all-round HCC Birmingham League (BL) 1st xi bowling effort.
With no Nirru, Naren ‘n Naheem notched ‘nstead, both bagging 3. George Landed 2 + Tiggy took two to traumatise this tame top two team.
An assured 30 from Lloydy calmed any dressing room nerves to see the Raj happy sunshine bus (“no licking the windows at the back”) return to Old Church Ave in time for tea ‘n medals and now a 4 point lead ahead of Attock at the top of Div 2.

    Big Jim in Cliff(ord)-hanger win…..

…as Jim senior, with an HCC top-score of the season so far (148*), saw our WL 2nd xi overcome a challenging 272 off the very last ball of the match v Stourport. He was ably assisted by captain, Kesta Henry (87) putting on over 260 for the 1st wicket, before Adam Yates calmly hit 5 off 3, including the last ball, after earlier only going for ~3 an over in 12, to reign in the Stourport charge. Sam James chipped in with 2 leg-spinning wickets.
