Saturday 2nd XI Season Review 2015

Led for the first time by the batsman and left-arm spinner Dominic Tuohey, the team had a number of capable deputies whenever Dominic, who had school commitments, was unavailable. Early availability among the players was not strong, and the team initially struggled in the Premier Division of the BDPCL, losing four consecutive early matches. However, as availability improved, the side's successes increased, and they finished the season in ninth position, despite a defeat, by three wickets, to champions Moseley on the final Saturday of the campaign. Harborne won six games, with one winning draw, but lost ten, with a further two losing draws, three games being abandoned.

We struggled to make 150 runs in an innings early in the season. In some respects the turning point was an encouraging victory over rivals Knowle & Dorridge (who were to finish in fifth place) in a win/lose game. K & D totalled 199-7 (Mo Rizwan 4-49) and we won by five wickets.

In the second half of the season all-rounder Alex Kirkpatrick was one of several players to make an impact. Baldev Raj scored 477 runs overall, and was exciting to watch as he scored quick runs in the lower middle order. Karan Bharaj, a promising young county batsman and off-spinner, hit 91 in a winning draw against West Bromwich Dartmouth; Dominic Tuohey made 70 in a thrilling victory by 18 runs at K & D; and Rizwan (5-48) and Tuohey (4-59) set up a fine victory by six wickets at Walmley, Greg Easter top-scoring with 49. And there were two victories over bottom side Barnt Green.

Abu Abdullah was among the young, promising seam bowlers, alongside Michael Keogh, who captured 5-34 at Brockhampton, and struck a straight six off the last ball of the innings, in a victory by 79 runs (Alex Kirkpatrick 57).

Dominic was grateful to the players for their support, after he took over from Alistair Lyttle, and he thanked the Hon Secretary for organising the umpires and umpiring often himself. He described the team as a "great group of players", but warned the club that work commitments would prevent him from captaining next year.
