Saturday 5th XI (Nomads) Season Review 2015

5th XI SATURDAY (NOMADS)

The Nomads began their campaign at Birlingham, where they lost to the eventual runners-up by 74 runs. Undaunted, the season unfolded promisingly, with several close victories and a narrow losing draw, two runs short of the target, at Blakedown against Hagley. At Romsley, Answer Mahmood produced "the performance of the season", hitting 132 off 75 balls, enabling us to reach our target of 206-3 with eight overs to spare. (He moved to London shortly afterwards.) The return game against Highley at Richmond Hill Road produced an exciting draw, with the totals level at 254 (Junayd Iqbal 5-30 and 42; Hamza Naeem 76; Josh Ray 45).

At Highley, centurions Justin McMillan and Usman Sajid added 255 for the fourth wicket in a total of 326-4. Justin was struck high on his pad, and the bowler appealed. Hamza, who was umpiring, lifted up his finger to the sky. A disbelieving Justin, who had reluctantly walked all the way back to the pavilion, had to be recalled by Hamza, who explained that he was pointing to the sky to signify that the ball was "too high". A winning draw was the reward, with the hosts nine wickets down and 80 runs short.

A creditable third place finish in Division Six of the WCL was the result of six victories and a winning draw, producing 201 points, 19 behind Birlingham, but 54 fewer than champions Cutnall Green. Hamza headed our batting with 268 runs at 38; Justin McMillan made 219 at 31; Matt Manning 189 at 63; and Fareed Mohammed 191 at 21.2. Captain Akram Farook led the bowlers with 21 wickets at 16.3 apiece, once capturing 5-23; Junayd Iqbal took eight at 7.9; and Sukhi Bharaj six at 11.3.
