Saturday 6th XI Season Review 2015

6th XI SATURDAY

Harborne's 6th XI finished 2015 in a respectable mid-table position, fifth out of ten, following a most eventful season. They won three games, with one winning draw, losing seven; a further three games were conceded by the opposition, one was tied, and three were abandoned.

There were two remarkable matches, by any standards. Harborne totalled 254 against Pedmore (Fareed Mohammed 90; Mike Harvey 32; Navid Anjum 30). They then bowled out Pedmore for just three runs, with Faheem Mohammed (younger brother of Fareed) capturing three wickets without conceding a run in six overs, and veteran Howard Clay capturing four wickets for three runs. One of the three runs was the result of a misfield by captain Navid Anjum. The Express & Star reported: "Skipper Paul Maley was left in total shock after witnessing his side's disastrous 251-run defeat against Harborne. Openers Andrew Smith and Paul Newey both had the ignominy of being Pedmore's top scorers, with one run each!" The newspaper ranked the total as the fifth lowest in cricketing history.

The game against runners-up Coombs Wood in May ended in a thrilling tie. Coombs Wood were bowled out for 82, with Phil Terry capturing five wickets. Requiring just three runs to win, a controversial run-out led to a Harborne collapse from 80-6 to 80-9, with our last man Asad Raza facing the bowling and needing three to win off two balls. In a tense atmosphere, he scored two from his first ball, but was bowled by the final delivery.

Navid Anjum scored 187 runs overall, and Will Clarke 171, his highest score 55. Howard Clay (seam) and Navid Anjum (spin) both took 11 wickets: Howard at an average of 15, 4-3 being his best performance; and Navid at 21.5, with a top haul of 4-44.
