Sunday 2nd XI

Sunday 2nd XI Season Review 2015

Without a regular captain for the second successive year, the reigning champions found the new structure of Division Two of the WSL, in which there were only two other 2nd XIs, extremely difficult. In fact, only Walmley and Harborne fielded genuine 2nd XIs, as runners-up Attock often fielded strong sides in this division. We finished, not surprisingly, seventh out of eight, with three victories and eight losses, and only Walmley below us, by two points. Olton & WW were just one point above us, whilst the runaway champions were Kenilworth Wardens.

A fine century by Usman Hussain, who was run out for 145, and 32 from Hamza Naeem, enabled us to total 267-6 at Walmley in August. Despite an unbeaten 92 from the hosts' opener John Pigott, and 68 not out from Callum Herron, Walmley were 46 runs short of our total, even though they had seven wickets in hand after 40 overs.

In April, we performed well to win the Robert Atherton Trophy quarter-final tie at Dorridge (the first game of the season), by four wickets. Karen Bharaj and Hamza Naeem shared six wickets as the hosts were dismissed for 206; Ian Powick (66) and Anil Ram (43) featured with the bat. In the semi-final we were beaten at Water Orton by 45 runs, chasing a revised total of 161 after rain. Our hosts were the eventual Trophy winners.
